FOP has only one known Cause, a Random genetic mutation in the ACVR1 Gene, the Gene that controls skeleton growth and the skeleton cycle, as well as the gradual ossification of your cartilage (the process of your Cartilage turning into bone). due to the low number of people affected by FOP, it is not known what conditions might influence and increase the chance to have FOP. FOp can also be passed down so it is technically hereditary, but most FOP victims don't have and don't want to have children as they fear of spreading down the terrible condition.
The skeleton cycle is the cycle of all your bones slowly getting replaced in your body. it is controlled by the ACVR1 protein, which is produced by the ACVR1 gene. WHat happens when you have FOP is that the ACVR1 gene interacts with activin (activin is something that the gene usually never interacts with), a BMP receptor, which causes the gene to begin to produce many ACVR1 proteins, signaling to the body to build bone. what happens then is an intense pain as sites around the body begin to inflame and turn to bone overnight.
